At the end of the month long Islamic period of fasting during daylight hours called Ramadan, the members of the Islamic community participate in a festival known as Eid to mark the end of Ramadan. This festival involves large and small scale gatherings for food, fun and being together with family and friends.
In northern Melbourne, a large communal Eid Festival is organised by the Arabic Society of Victoria. Somewhere between 20-30,000 people attend the Broadmeadows Eid festival to take advantage of all manner of stalls offering food, drink, clothing and a variety of other items.
Last year, the Moreland Greens rented a tent stall at the Broadmeadows Eid Festival. This was held just prior to the 2007 federal election. Over the two days, the Greens volunteers had contact with about 200 interested people. People attending the Eid festival were friendly and welcoming towards all who participated in the Greens stall. Many positive comments were received about how the Greens have been supportive of the Muslim community in the face of fear mongering by some in the wider community.
The Moreland Greens are again holding a Greens stall at the Broadmeadows Eid Festival from 9-7pm on Saturday 4 October and 9-7.30pm on Sunday 5 October 2008.
If you would like to volunteer to be on the stall for a few hours please contact Rob Humphreys on 0438190248 asap. You dont have to be an expert on Greens policies....there will be someone else on the roster who can help if you get a tough question...the latter is highly unlikely.....and you can also take a break and wander around the stalls sampling as much exotic food as you like!!!
