The People Plan - New Transport for Moreland

The Moreland Greens have released a local transport plan detailing a major upgrade for public transport in the City of Moreland. The plan outlines the local developments included in the Greens $14 billion blueprint that will allow Melburnians to go anywhere by public transport with high-frequency train, tram and bus services covering 101 major centres.

"We believe it is time for a transport system that gives people the ability to travel in safety and comfort to work, to study, to shop, and to visit friends and family without needing to look at a timetable. Services will run at 10 minutes intervals on weekdays and regularly through the night," said Toby Archer, Greens Candidate for North-East Ward.

"The Greens are proposing new train lines and extensions, new tram lines and extensions, and wholesale improvements to the bus network. The plan covers all major growth areas within Moreland, it includes the airport, and it fills in the gaps in our middle ring suburbs," said Mr Archer.

"Areas like Pascoe Vale, Hadfield, Newlands and Fawkner deserve high quality public transport, just like the inner suburbs. We will be campaigning for State and Federal Governments to back the plan and build a modern transport system for the Northern suburbs," said Mr Archer.

Major upgrades proposed are:

- West Coburg tram to Glenroy (Route 55). Route: Cumberland Rd - Boundary Rd - West St - Glenroy Rd. Major Destination: Glenroy Shops and Railway Station.

- North Coburg tram extended to Fawkner (Route 19). Route: Sydney Rd - Jukes Rd. Major Destination: Fawkner Shops.

- New Heidelberg - Essendon tram. Route: Burgundy St - Bell St - Albert St - Murray St - Elizabeth St - Bell St - Melville Rd - Reynard St - Pascoe Vale Rd - Fletcher St. Major Destinations include Coburg Shopping Centre and Coburg Railway Station.

- Upfield line redirected through Parkville and extended to Broadmeadows. New stations: Parkville and Campbellfield.

- Improved services and real time displays for all local bus services.
The creation of 16 new tram routes and the extension of seven existing routes will create a connecting grid that aids east-west travel and provides an alternative ring route to the road system.

Mr Archer said the Greens were calling for comment on the plan from local government, community groups and individuals. "We believe everyone should be able to have their say on the future of Melbourne. The best public transport systems have been based on local communities playing a leading role in recommending priority routes and new services."
